Alberta Power and Energy Innovation Forum

On November 8, 2012, members from NSMG-Net’s Project 1.3 (Disturbance Detection, Diagnosis and Protection) attended the 5th annual Power and Energy Innovation Forum organized by the Alberta Power Industry Consortium (APIC) in Edmonton, AB. Around 150 people participated in the forum, both from the Alberta power industry and from the University of Alberta. The theme of this year’s Forum was Innovations and Challenges in Power System Asset Management. APIC consists of six Alberta power companies and the University of Alberta.

At the forum, members of NSMG-Net had the opportunity to become familiar with the issues faced by industry in power system asset management, exchanging their knowledge and ideas with researchers from Alberta power companies. In addition, during the poster session, the members presented three posters to introduce the NSMG-Net and its activities to Alberta power companies as well as professors and researchers in University of Alberta. The responses received from industry have been very helpful for the NSMG-Net student researchers.

NSMG-Net Students at UTC Canada

On September 10th, two NSMG-Net students attended the 2012 Canadian Utility Telecom Conference (UTCC), held at the Sheraton Vancouver Wall Centre Hotel.

Here is a brief report from one of them, Moein Manbachi from SFU/BCIT (Project 3.4):

Sina Mashayekhi (UBC, Project 3.1) and I presented our research at the UTCC student poster session last week. This session was a great opportunity for students to network and present research to utilities and energy companies across Canada, and to their technology partners.

We received valuable feedback and hints from industrial experts, which will enable our research studies to have maximum practical application. Events such as these can really help students bridge the gap between research studies and real industrial issues.

I wish to thank in particular Dr. Sara Bavarian who organized the poster session and kindly assisted students during the conference.

Two Months Until AGM 2012!

Posted on

Not long now until Wednesday 26th September, when the NSMG-Net Year Two AGM will be held at the Hilton Montreal Bonaventure!

Students preparing posters and presentations may use the NSMG-Net templates. If you use your own formats, please be sure to include the NSERC and NSMG-Net logos most prominently.

As you’ll recall, our meeting is timed to coincide with CIGRE Canada’s meeting, which is hosted and sponsored by NSMG-Net partners Hydro Quebec and Schneider Electric and which will attract professionals from many Canadian utilities and technology companies.

NSMG-Net Researchers and Students that have not yet registered for CIGRE should do so as soon as possible. This is a great opportunity for students to meet their future employers! Researchers should use their project travel budget for all AGM expenses (travel, board and conference fee).

As a reminder, all NSMG-Net industry and government partners are strongly encouraged to participate in the NSMG-Net AGM, which is in fact open to all interested parties.

Please be sure to inform the Network Manager of your dates and party size for catering purposes.
